Kalau mengikut kalendar Katolik Vatikan ke-II, Hari Roh Suci jatuh pada 2 November tetapi kalau mengikut kalendar Katolik Tradisional, Hari Roh Suci jatuh pada 3 November setiap tahun (Kalendar Tradisional adalah sejarah hampir 2000 tahun gereja Katolik). Walaupun tarikh perayaan roh suci berbeza, tetapi bulan November tetap dipilih untuk mengingati roh-roh umat yang telah meninggal dunia, yang sedang ‘membayar’ dosa mereka melalui pembersihan di Api Pencucian sebelum layak untuk masuk ke Syurga. Kepada mereka yang mempunyai keluarga, sanak saudara atau sahabat-handai yang telah meninggal, doakanlah roh-roh mereka agar tempoh ‘kesakitan’ mereka dipendekkan. Roh-roh di Api Pencucian tidak dapat mendoakan untuk diri mereka sendiri. Mereka sangat bergantung kepada umat-umat yang masih hidup didunia mendoakan bagi pihak mereka. Mereka pula apabila naik ke syurga, akan amat berterima kasih dengan sipendoa mereka dan akan membalas doa umat-umat tadi. Doa Misa, Rosario (dua doa yang dapat membebaskan roh lebih cepat jika diperbanyakkan) atau doa-doa tradisional Katolik yang pendek (misalnya: Bapa Kami, Salam Maria dan sbgnya) amatlah dinantikan-nantikan oleh roh-roh ini. Kerja-kerja penebusan seperti berpuasa (dari segi makanan dan perbuatan) juga boleh memendekkan tempoh roh di api pencucian. Selain itu, gereja juga memberi indulgensi kepada umat yang melawat dan berdoa di tanah perkuburan dari November 1 – 9.
“Dari sebab itu maka disuruhnyalah mengadakan korban penebus salah untuk semua orang yang sudah mati itu, supaya mereka dilepaskan dari dosa mereka.” – 2 Makabe 12:46
November – The month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory
The feast day for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, under the Novus Ordo calendar, falls on the 2 November. The Traditional Catholic calendar celebrates the feast day on 3 November. Regardless of the change in feast day, the month of November is offered for the Holy Souls. The Holy Souls in Purgatory are purified by fire to pay back for sins that have been forgiven but have not been fully atoned for before they can go to heaven. For those who have family members, relatives and friends who are deceased, it is good to pray for their souls as these souls rely on the faithful who are still living to pray for their souls. They in return will pray for those who pray for them when they enjoy beatific vision. The Mass and Rosary are two most powerful prayers as means to speedily release their souls in purgatory. The short traditional Catholic prayers i.e. the ‘Our Father’, ‘Hail Mary’ and etc. and penance and sacrificial work can also shorten their time in Purgatory. The church grants indulgences to her children who visit and pray at the cemetery from November 1 -9.
