What is Scandal?

Woe to that man, He says, by whom the scandal cometh! It were better for him, that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea. (Matt. XVIII.) These things have I spoken to you, that you may not be scandalized. (John XVI. 1.)

How is scandal given?
By speaking, doing or omitting that which will be, to others an occasion, of sin: Scandal is given in different ways, for instance: if you dress improperly, speak improper words, or sing bad songs; by which you can see, that your neighbor will be tempted to think, desire or act wrongly; or what is worse, if you act sinfully, in the presence of, others, or bring bad books., books against good morals, or against the holy faith, among people; if you incite others to anger, cursing, and vengeance, or if you prevent them from attending church, the sermon, or catechetical instruction, etc. In all these things you become guilty of scandal, as well as of all the sins to which it gives rise. If at the Last judgment we will be unable to, give an account of our own sins, how, then can we answer for the innumerable sins caused by, the scandal we have given? Therefore Christ pronounces a terrible, woe upon those who give scandal.

The fact that Mel Gibson has been pronounced in the media as being religious and a public representative of the Catholic persona (or so it seemed, Mel is a Sede-Vacantist) his public actions are scandalous--pure and simple. To allow anyone (especially the high calibre ... attention that he gets) cause to think scandalously by this situation is a sin. As Catholics, we are taught to avoid these types of occasions of sin at all costs. While they only 'stepped into the limelight'...look at the controversy it has caused.

If a couple has lived together before marriage (Mel Gibson did with his wife, Robyn and were expecting at time of wedding) that is not a valid reason for annulment. Annulments are only granted in cases where the marriage was never legitimate/legal/valid in the first place. Not necessarily because of cohabitation. They were married in the Catholic Church, even though Robyn is not a Catholic, so their marriage was certainly valid.
God honours our free will, even if it is the wrong one. Mel's marriage is valid...therefore, annulment is not an option. Any practicing Catholic who knows their faith knows that God binds the marriage...not the priest. Mel is still married in God's eyes...regardless of what civil/earthly law says.

Know you not that the unjust shall not possess the kingdom of God? Do not err: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor liers with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor railers, nor extortioners, shall possess the kingdom of God. – 1 Cor 6: 9-10

Parents also give scandal to their children by giving bad example; by excessive anger, cursing and swearing; by avarice; by gluttony in eating and drinking; by extravagance and vanity in dress; by sneering at religion; by not keeping their children from evil company, but sometimes even bringing them into it; by not punishing and endeavoring to eradicate their children's vices.
How much parents sin, through such scandals, cannot be expressed; at the Day of judgement, their children will be their accusers! So parents, be AWARE!!

OPEN LETTER TO MEL GIBSON:

Feast of St. Pope Pius V, May 5, 2009

Dear Mr. Gibson,

In the wake of your sad divorce and the public display of your mistress, we’d like to reiterate the Church’s 2,000 year old teaching on the Sacrament of Marriage:

In God’s eyes, you’re not allowed to put-out your wife of 30 years. Furthermore, Miss Grigorieva is an adulteress like Herodius, who St. John the Baptist reprimanded Herod Antipas for by saying: “It is not lawful for thee to have her” (Matthew 14:4)

You claimed to be a traditional Catholic and profited immensely from our Lord’s “Passion.” This earned you the higher duty of state of a lay Catholic leader. Your responsibility is to live an exemplary life and obey the 10 Commandments. The divorce and mistress are mortal sins and international scandals that will make our Lord and His Church suffer more intensely.

We hope Catholics and non Catholics understand that your behavior will never meet Our Lord’s standards or those of His bride, the Holy Catholic Church.

For the sake of your soul, your family and for your fellow Catholics the world over, we pray you will reconsider your mistaken position and make amends.

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
