Gereja Katolik selepas Vatikan ke-II...

What can be said about the post-Vatican II Catholic church? It is totally the opposite of what has been mentioned under the posting ‘the Catholic church before Vatican II’. I think there is no need for me to elaborate further as ‘eyes have seen and ears have heard’…

  1. The building architectural for the church has changed – modern and artistic design is more preferred. It has no Catholic identity and can easily be mistaken for a Protestant church.
  2. The most significant change (a revolution) in the history of the Catholic Church is the change from Traditional Latin Mass to the Novus Ordo Mass or New (even though Traditional Latin Mass has never been abrogated). Vernacular language is used in the New Mass and the majority of Catholic priests today do not know Latin.
  3. The church hymn is very ‘worldly’ – Hymns are mostly contemporary songs which have rock, pop and etc connotation in it. The musical instruments being used are similar to those used in any rock bands.
  4. Priests do not wear their cassock all the time. Most of the time they dress up like lay people. Some priest will pin a cross on their shirt (like wearing a badge) so that lay people can identify them but some can also be seen wearing jeans and T-shirt…sometime even short pants when they go for shopping (shows lack of seriousness in their profession)
  5. Even nuns and brothers have changed their ‘uniform’. The brothers dress up exactly like the priest and the nun’s uniform has shorter skirts and wear veil exposing some hair.
  6. The spirit of ‘fear of God’ seems to have diminished among the faithful. This is evident by the rampant immodesty among the faithful especially women.
  7. Fasting before receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion is one hour (maybe lesser).
  8. The faithful receive Communion on the palm of the hand and by standing up. In the mass of the Neo-Cathecumenate, it is the priest who will go to the faithful, who sit down and wait for the priest to distribute Communion to them.
  9. Many faithful receive Communion in the state of mortal sins. Some sins in God’s commandment, today, are not even considered as sin anymore.
  10. Fasting from meat is only on the first Fridays of every month and days of obligation. Sometimes even the days of obligation can be ‘postponed’ if it coincides with the festival of other religions.
  11. Devotion to Mother Mary is lacking. Many Catholic today are professing their belief like ‘Protestant’ or ‘free thinker’ and etc while still remaining as Catholic.
  12. Devotion to the Saints is almost none. There are many more changes in the Catholic church after Vatican -II. The listing above points out only some of the most obvious changes.
