A Priest's Sermon
In the above picture - the serpent is always lurking to try to make us think only of this life, and forget the afterlife.
I would like to share the sermon of a local priest when I attended my friend’s late dad requiem mass. The priest exhorted the faithful to be prepared for their deaths. Death will come like a thief, so unexpected, that many will be caught unprepared. So this priest shared his side of story, about an old woman whom he knew very well. The old woman bought a coffin, put it in her house and wiped her coffin everyday. The priest said, this was the old woman’s way of making preparation for her death. Then, the priest compared this old woman to a young man, whom he also knew very well, who unfortunately did not make any preparation for his death. So, it happened that the young man died first.
I feel really annoyed and angry because as a priest he should have grasped the opportunity to speak about the Four Last Things during the requiem mass. In my opinion, the priest lacks focus (or probably also knowledge) in his profession. The message in his sermon is more like telling the faithful to make ‘worldly’ preparation. The Dogma of the Four Last Things is the most basic and fundamental knowledge that a Catholic must know and yet, it is being trampled and forgotten. I can even recall some jokes by some Christians about ‘Hell being air-conditioned and so hell is not as hot as it used to be anymore’. Hell exists and many will go there no matter how hard people try to justify that hell doesn’t exist. To reject or make fun about the teaching of hell also means to reject and make fun of the teaching of our Lord, Jesus Christ. ‘…Jesus Christ, yesterday, and today; and the same for ever.’ (Hebrew 13:8)
