Someone Really Important

The Pope goes to New York. He is picked up at the airport by a limousine. He looks at the beautiful car and says to the driver, "You know, I hardly ever get to drive. Would you please let me?"

The driver is understandably hesitant and says, "I'm sorry, but I don't think I'm supposed to do that."

But the Pope persists, "Please?" The driver finally lets up. "Oh, all right, I can't really say no to the Pope."

So the Pope takes the wheel, and hits the gas and goes around 100 mph in a 45 zone. A policeman notices and pulls him over.

The cop walks up and asks the Pope to roll down the window. Startled and surprised, the young officer asks the Pope to wait a minute. He goes back to his patrol car and radios the chief.

Cop: Chief, I have a problem.

Chief: What sort of problem?

Cop: Well, you see, I pulled over this guy for driving way over the speed limit but it's someone really important.

Chief: Important like the mayor?

Cop: No, no, much more important than that.

Chief: Important like the governor?

Cop: Wayyyyyy more important than that.

Chief: Like the president?

Cop: More.

Chief: Who's more important than the president?

Cop: I don't know, but he's got the Pope driving for him!

Orang yang paling penting dalam dunia adalah seorang ibu. Dia tidak akan mendapat anugerah sebagai orang yang berjaya membangunkan Katedral Notre Dame. Dia tidak perlu pun berbuat demikian.

Grace Before and After Meal During Easter Time

The traditional Catholic Prayers Before and After Meal have been forgotten by many Catholics. The prayer before meal is commonly replaced with a lengthy self-created prayer and the prayer after meal is completely forgotten. Once, I overheard a conversation between a mum and a son at the Gaya Street Bazaar - the son while looking at a frame for Prayers Before and After Meal, was surprise at seeing the Prayer after Meal - he said it's never been prayed before in all his life as a Catholic so he didn't even know the existence of such prayer. The poor boy is probably about 16 – 18 year-old. One of the basic duties of Catholic parents is to teach their children the basic daily Catholic prayers. If even this is neglected, I dare not even imagine what the future will be like for the coming generation.

One of the traditions of the Roman Catholic Church during Easter time, starting from Easter Sunday until the next Easter Saturday, is to substitute the grace before and after meal with this prayer:

This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad, Alleluia!

There is no 'Amen' at the end.

You Are What You Eat

Meaning: The notion that to be fit and healthy you need to eat good food. This phrase has come to us via quite a tortuous route. Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote, in Physiologie du Gout, ou Meditations de Gastronomie Transcendante, 1826:

"Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es." [ Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are ]. In an essay entitled Concerning Spiritualism and Materialism, 1863/4, Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach wrote: "Der Mensch ist, was er ißt." That translates into English as 'man is what he eats'.

Neither Brillat-Savarin or Feuerbach meant their quotations to be taken literally. They were stating that that the food one eats has a bearing on what one's state of mind and health. The actual phrase didn't emerge in English until some time later. In the 1920s and 30s, the nutritionist Victor Lindlahr, who was a strong believer in the idea that food controls health, developed the Catabolic Diet. That view gained some adherents at the time and the earliest known printed example is from an advert for beef in a 1923 edition of the Bridgeport Telegraph, for 'United Meet [sic] Markets': "Ninety per cent of the diseases known to man are caused by cheap foodstuffs. You are what you eat."

In 1942, Lindlahr published You Are What You Eat: how to win and keep health with diet. That seems to be the vehicle that took the phrase into the public consciousness. Lindlahr is likely to have also used the term in his radio talks in the late 1930s (now lost unfortunately), which would also have reached a large audience.

The phrase got a new lease of life in the 1960s hippy era. The food of choice of the champions of this notion was macrobiotic wholefood and the phrase was adopted by them as a slogan for healthy eating. The belief in the diet in some quarters was so strong that when Adelle Davis, a leading spokesperson for the organic food movement, contracted the cancer that later killed her, she attributed the illness to the junk food she had eaten at college.

Some commentators have suggested that the idea is from much earlier and that it has a religious rather than dietary basis. In the Roman Catholic Church, the bread and wine of the Eucharist are changed into the body and blood of Jesus (Transubstantiation).

So, is the phrase Catholic or catabolic?

Archbishop Thomas Cranmer in 1549:

We offer and present unto Thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto Thee; humbly beseeching Thee that we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of Thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with Thy grace and heavenly benediction, and made one body with Him, that He may dwell in us, and we in Him.

Transubstantiation certainly links food and the body. Is there a clear link between the belief and the phrase? In the book of Saint John 6:54-55, Jesus said to them: "Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day."

Hello, I'm back...

It has been quite awhile since I last posted my writings. I have been quite busy with work and family for the past few weeks. When I am busy with these two things, I find it very difficult to concentrate on my writings especially when the topic that I write about is of utmost important. The month of October is the month of the Holy Rosary. There is no better word to describe the efficacy of the Holy Rosary than the following words by the Saints and the late Sr. Lucia.

Agak lama sudah saya tidak membuat posting ke dalam blog saya. Kesibukan dalam mengurus hal kerja dan keluarga selama beberapa minggu yang lalu telah menyebabkan saya lembab dan tidak dapat memberi perhatian kepada blog ini. Saya sentiasa memandang berat dengan posting yang saya masukkan disini sebab ianya adalah berkenaan sesuatu yang sangat mustahak (suatu kerja yang saya anggap bukan kerja senang). Bulan Oktober adalah bulan Rosario Suci. Kepentingan berdoa Rosario dan kebaikan yang boleh diperolehi dari doa ini ada disampaikan oleh beberapa santo dan mendiang Sister Lucia.
